Learn to Free Write - Day 4

Working on my consistency.  I was shocked when my alarm went off this morning, usually I wake up before my alarm goes off – either I’m naturally waking around then or my cat walks on me and 20 pounds of cat will wake up anyone!  But today I was dreaming and then my alarm went off.  It was such a shock that I hit snooze, but forced myself to get up when it went off again 5 minutes later.  I’m very happy I did.

My dream.  It was interesting.  I had a really good conversation with a colleague a couple of days ago.  The main point of our conversation was to discuss the EDI work that’s going on at my company, and to deep a little further into discussions between the two of us, and just generally catch up, since we used to sit right next to each other, and haven’t gotten to see each other for months now.  He mentioned to me that he didn’t really feel welcomed to the firm as an intern.  He was a little disappointed on his first day.  And while a welcome lunch is a part of the NEO (or it was pre-COVID), he’s not even sure he got that.  He mentioned that I was one of the first people that truly welcomed him.  I shook his hand, introduced myself and talked a little about my role with Education interiors and that we’d be working together (and that I looked forward to it).  How simple is that, but clearly it made a big impression on him.

I remember a similar story from Meghan on our marketing team.  She was standing outside the front door a few minutes early for her job interview (always a nerve-wracking day), but the front door wasn’t opened yet.  I greeted her on my way in, and asked her if she’d like to follow me inside and I could at least show her to the front lobby and connect her with HR so she didn’t have to stand outside wondering when they’d come and if she was even in the right place.  Anything to help calm the nerves.  She mentioned to me years later that my welcome was part of the reason she decided that day that she wanted to work for my firm.

So in my discussion with my colleague the other day, I mentioned that maybe I could help to improve our welcome to the team.  Including the best first impression, but also making sure they’re getting all of the meetings on their calendars, making sure they’re set up for success.

I have semi recently been asked to consider taking on an operations role.  I know this is part of that role, and I’d like to consider starting to jump in to this, and seeing what I can do to improve.  I think first is a conversation with the current Ops / leadership, but maybe it’s just a phone call.  Hi, Welcome.  It’s too bad we can’t meet in person, but I wanted to reach out and give you a personal welcome.

So my dream as I was waking up, had all of these players in it.  Specifically the current Ops guy.  And now that I’ve gone down this rabbit hole in thought, I can’t remember exactly what was happening, in the dream, except maybe, someone had broccoli on their head.
